The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has urged Nigerian universities to meticulously record the history of the Yoruba people instead of relying on biased accounts.
He emphasized that this comprehensive documentation would not only promote unity but also unveil the connections among various ethnic groups.
The Ooni also presented this challenge to academia during a press briefing preceding the International Conference on ‘Ile-Ife and Yoruba Civilization: The Intersection of Tradition and Modernity’ at his palace in Ife.

Highlighting that only a fraction of Yoruba history is currently documented, the monarch is collaborating with select universities to ensure the thorough documentation of their history, aiming to enhance global cohesion among the Yoruba people.
The Ooni mentioned evidence suggesting that the Igbo ethnicity may have originated from Ile-Ife, citing the presence of “Ile-Igbo” within the palace as historical proof.
He clarified that this initiative does not involve the government to maintain impartiality in presenting historical facts accurately for future generations.
Professor Siyan Oyeweso, a renowned historian, added that the conference’s primary objective is to convene scholars for discussions on properly recording Yoruba history, with particular focus on Ile-Ife as the race’s origin.
