A retired Squadron Leader of the Nigerian Airforce, Ben Williams, has expressed strong concerns over the appointment of Defence Ministers who lack appropriate expertise in security matters.
Williams, a security consultant and prominent member of the ruling All Progressives Congress in Delta State, voiced his reservations during an interview with journalists in Abuja on Friday.
Williams emphasized that the defence sector requires leadership from individuals with a deep understanding of security issues and a proven track record in the field.

He argued that Nigeria is currently facing a range of complex security challenges that demand strategic thinking and tactical expertise.
The retired military officer questioned the wisdom of appointing politicians without a strong security background to oversee critical formations across the country, including police commands and military units.
He stressed that security matters are specialized and demanding, and therefore, leadership in the defence sector should come from individuals with a strong foundation in security and defence strategies.
Williams also echoed the sentiments of a political analyst, Mahdi Shehu, who criticized the recent appointments of Mohammed Badaru and Bello Matawalle as Defence Ministers, describing them as an “insult.” He suggested that the appointments do not align with the requirements of the role and the challenges facing the nation’s security.
In his view, Williams recommended that President Ahmed Tinubu reconsider the appointments and prioritize individuals who possess the necessary qualifications and expertise in security matters. He emphasized that Nigeria’s security challenges require comprehensive solutions and that the defence sector should be led by individuals with the appropriate knowledge and skills.
Williams concluded by urging the President to tap into the vast pool of retired military officers who have received extensive training and experience in security and defence strategies. He emphasized the importance of making appropriate appointments to ensure the nation’s security and the safety of its citizens.
