Senator Ali Ndume, the Chief Whip of the Nigerian Senate, has provided insights into his abrupt exit from the Senate chamber following an altercation with Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
The incident occurred during a plenary session when Senator Ndume invoked a point of order to address what he considered procedural violations within the chamber.
During an interview with BBC Hausa, Senator Ndume disclosed that his exit was prompted by a disagreement over a motion related to the closure of Nigeria’s borders. The motion was brought forward by Senator Kawu Sumaila and was initially deemed non-urgent. However, Senator Akpabio allowed Senator Sumaila to speak on the motion before its suspension due to its security implications.

Senator Ndume expressed his intention to clarify the significance of the motion, but he was not granted an opportunity to address the chamber. He emphasized that the motion, though significant, fell outside the Senate’s jurisdiction, as the border closure was initiated during the tenure of President Muhammadu Buhari as the head of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
Furthermore, Senator Ndume pointed out that the authority to advocate on behalf of Nigeria regarding the border closure rested with President Buhari. He emphasized the need to involve the nation’s president in addressing the matter, but his attempt to convey this message was not permitted.
Senator Ndume’s exit occurred during a period of prayer, leading to misinterpretations by his colleagues and journalists alike. The incident has since sparked discussions among the political circles, highlighting the intricacies of parliamentary proceedings and the importance of proper communication within the Senate.
