Why I Didn’t Sack Emefiele As CBN Gov — Buhari

In a recently unveiled memoir titled “Working with Buhari: Reflections of a Special Adviser, Media and Publicity (2015 – 2023),” former President Muhammadu Buhari refuted speculations and clarified that he did not dismiss Godwin Emefiele, the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), due to presidential ambitions.

The memoir, authored by former Special Adviser Femi Adesina, was presented in Abuja on Tuesday.

Buhari stressed that Emefiele had never disclosed any presidential ambitions during his tenure, and the decision not to remove him without concrete evidence was rooted in a commitment to fairness and justice.

The memoir delves into Buhari’s defense of the Naira redesign policy implemented by Emefiele, citing its contribution to a cleaner general election in 2023. Buhari noted that individuals with excessive wealth faced challenges with the policy, emphasizing the need for accountability and fairness.

Buhari expressed, “When he was linked with the campaign for the 2023 presidency, I did not ask him because he told nobody he was getting involved. Otherwise, I would have removed him and told the nation why.”

Reflecting on leadership principles, Buhari highlighted the importance of evidence before taking punitive actions and acknowledged the impermanence of leadership roles. He emphasized his commitment to conducting himself with a clear conscience.
