Chaos and violence erupted in the Garki area of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, as two factions of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) clashed.
The clash occurred on Sapele Crescent, off Ladoke Akintola Boulevard, Garki II, Abuja.
The conflict highlights an ongoing dispute within the NURTW, which observers argue requires urgent government intervention to prevent further breakdown of law and order, especially in the nation’s capital.

The clash reportedly began when supporters of NURTW President Tajudeen Baruwa marched towards the union’s national headquarters, currently occupied by the Lagos Park Management Committee led by Tajudeen Agbede.
Baruwa had previously sought the intervention of the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Labour Congress to resolve the situation, but these efforts were unsuccessful.
In response, Baruwa vowed to defend his mandate and called on aggrieved members to follow due process and seek legal redress. He accused former NURTW leaders of illegally occupying the union’s National Secretariat and alleged that the police were working in favor of the Lagos Park Management Committee.
Eyewitnesses reported that during the conflict, gunshots were fired into the air, heightening tension in the area.
The spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, SP Josephine Adeh, referred inquiries to the Force Headquarters, and the Force PRO, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, did not respond to requests for comment.
The situation underscores the need for swift resolution and intervention to prevent further violence and instability within the NURTW.
