Vice President Kashim Shettima, the current Vice President of Nigeria, has expressed his full support for the Federal Government’s plans to distribute grains and fertilizer to Nigerian citizens through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) as a measure to alleviate the impact of petrol subsidy removal.
The decision was reached during the 4th meeting of the National Economic Council (NEC), chaired by Vice President Shettima, at the State House Executive Council Chambers in Abuja.
The resolution to distribute essential commodities like grains and fertilizer aims to provide relief to Nigerians amid concerns over the removal of petrol subsidy and its potential effects on the cost of living. The move is part of the government’s efforts to address the socio-economic challenges posed by the subsidy removal.

Vice President Shettima, in his capacity as the Chair of the NEC, highlighted the significance of the measures proposed to mitigate the impact of petrol subsidy removal. The Council took into consideration the presentation made by Anambra State Governor, Professor Charles C. Soludo, who heads the NEC Adhoc Committee on cushioning the effect of petrol subsidy removal.
Following thorough deliberations, Vice President Shettima read the resolutions of the Council, stating, “we will also pursue vigorously, the mass deployment of CNG-powered vehicles and establishment of autogas conversion plants/kits in all States in the short-term and deployment of electric buses and cars with charging infrastructure across the country.”
The Council also emphasized the importance of enhanced engagements between State Governors and labor union leaders across the country. In this regard, the provision of cost-of-living allowances for civil servants in both the State and Federal Civil Services was proposed and received the Council’s endorsement.
Additionally, the NEC expressed its commitment to supporting the federal government’s efforts to improve infrastructure, with a particular focus on rehabilitating and upgrading dilapidated highways across the nation.
As Vice President Shettima leads the Council in supporting these measures, the government aims to address the challenges posed by the subsidy removal and provide necessary support to the Nigerian populace. The distribution of essential commodities, encouragement of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered vehicles, and infrastructure upgrade are seen as key steps to alleviate the impact on citizens.
Vice President Shettima’s support and leadership in steering these initiatives reflect the government’s determination to promote economic resilience and enhance the well-being of Nigerians. The Council’s endorsement of these measures marks a collaborative effort by various stakeholders in navigating the economic landscape and ensuring a prosperous future for the nation.
