Renowned US rapper Nicki Minaj was reportedly arrested at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport on Saturday on suspicion of possessing soft drugs. The rapper was later released after paying a fine.
Minaj, 41, shared photos on social media showing her being questioned by officials before her scheduled performance in Britain later the same day. While Dutch police did not explicitly confirm Minaj’s identity, they did confirm the arrest of a 41-year-old American woman on similar charges.
“We never confirm the identity of a person in custody, but I can confirm we have arrested a 41-year-old woman who is suspected of trying to export soft drugs to another country,” said Robert Kapel, a spokesman for the military police.

Kapel later informed that the suspect had been released after paying a “reasonable” fine. “We have no justification for keeping her under arrest at this time. For our file, we have all the data. Case closed,” he stated.
On social media platform X, Minaj claimed the cannabis found in her luggage belonged to her security staff. “Remember, they removed my bags against my will,” she wrote. “My security has already informed them those pre-rolls belong to him.”
Minaj also expressed her frustration, suggesting that the incident was an attempt to delay her and generate negative media coverage. “Now they said I have to go five mins away to make a statement about my security to the police precinct,” she posted. “It’s to try to make me late so that they can write negative stories.”
Despite the Netherlands’ reputation for a relaxed approach to cannabis, with well-known coffee shops selling marijuana under a “tolerance” policy, exporting drugs remains illegal.
Nicki Minaj rose to fame in 2010 with her provocative videos and unique animated flow. Known for her bold style, including neon costumes and wigs, she has become one of rap’s most influential female artists with hits like “Starships,” “Bang Bang,” and “Anaconda.”
The hashtag #FREENICKI trended on X as fans awaited news about her scheduled performance in Manchester as part of her Pink Friday 2 World Tour. Minaj expressed her frustration on Instagram, stating, “They’ve been trying to stop me from going to every show.”
Minaj, known for her outspoken nature and frequent controversies, including a high-profile feud with rapper Cardi B, has often been a tabloid fixture. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she made headlines for refusing to attend the Met Gala due to its vaccination requirement, claiming she needed to do more research before getting vaccinated. Her controversial statements about the vaccine were publicly refuted by Trinidad’s health minister.
Despite this recent setback, Minaj’s influence in the music industry remains strong, and her fans eagerly await her next move.
