Biden Urges UN to Confront Russia’s ‘Naked Aggression’ in Ukraine

In a forceful address to the United Nations on Tuesday, US President Joe Biden called upon the international body to take action against Russia’s “naked aggression” in Ukraine.

He emphasized the potential risks that other nations might face if the world allows Moscow’s actions to go unchecked.

Speaking at the UN General Assembly in New York, Biden’s words were met with applause from the audience, which included Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Notably absent from the gathering were key leaders, including those from France, as well as US allies Britain and France. Russian President Vladimir Putin was also notably absent.

Biden cautioned that the UN’s fundamental principles of peace and national sovereignty were in jeopardy if the world chose to appease Russia, which had invaded Ukraine in February 2022. He stated, “Russia’s price for peace is Ukraine’s capitulation, Ukraine’s territory, and Ukraine’s children. Russia believes that the world will grow weary and allow it to brutalize Ukraine without consequence.”

The US President raised a crucial question: “Can any member state in this body feel confident that they are protected if you allow Ukraine to be carved up? Is the independence of any nation secure? I’d respectfully suggest the answer’s no.”

Biden assured that the United States and its allies would continue to support the courageous people of Ukraine in their efforts to remove Russian forces from the country.

Ukrainian President Zelensky, seated in the Ukrainian delegation’s section, showed his approval by applauding at the conclusion of Biden’s speech. Zelensky is scheduled to visit the White House to seek additional US aid and weaponry for Ukraine’s ongoing counteroffensive against Russian forces.

During his visit to the United States, Zelensky is also set to meet with members of the US Congress, where President Biden’s administration is striving to garner support for a new $24 billion Ukrainian aid package, despite growing opposition from Republicans.

Zelensky is slated to deliver a speech at the UN General Assembly later on Tuesday, followed by participation in a special session on Ukraine at the UN Security Council on Wednesday. The international community continues to watch closely as the crisis in Ukraine unfolds, and efforts to address Russian aggression intensify.
