The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has announced a reduction in tuition fees after meetings with the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) executives, which followed several student protests.
The vice-chancellor of the University, Folashade Ogunsola, expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the meetings and stated, “Like everything, once you start something, you come back to the table to discuss, and we are always listening to our students. When we heard loud and clear that they really wanted a reduction in fees, we felt it was important that we listened to that.”
As a result of these discussions, UNILAG has reduced fees for returning students by taking away N20,000 across the board. For example, returning students who initially paid N100,000 will now pay N80,000 per annum. Students in the medical field will pay N170,000 instead of the initially announced N190,000.

For incoming students, N10,000 has been slashed from their fees, and utility bills have been reduced from the initial N20,000 to N15,000. Convocation fees have also been reduced to N27,000.
The initial fee hike had been attributed to the need for students to receive the best learning experience, but this decision faced resistance from students, leading to protests and discussions that ultimately resulted in the fee reduction.
This development is seen as a response to the concerns of students and a move to make education more accessible to a wider range of students at UNILAG.
