Ukraine Seeks Alternative Routes for Vital Grain Exports Amidst Russia’s Suspension

In a determined bid to maintain affordable food prices and prevent starvation in Africa and Asia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced today that his country is actively seeking alternative routes for its vital grain exports.

This move comes in response to Russia’s suspension of the ‘Grain from Ukraine’ programme, a UN and Turkish-brokered arrangement that has been instrumental in providing much-needed sustenance to millions around the world.

Addressing a group of international media executives visiting Kyiv on a fact-finding mission, President Zelensky made it clear that Ukraine is resolute in its efforts to find new avenues for grain exports.

The ‘Grain from Ukraine’ programme had allowed Ukraine to export grain to African and Asian markets through the Black Sea port of Odesa in South East Ukraine. However, Russia’s provocative decision to disrupt the agreement has threatened food security for approximately 62 million people in Africa alone.

“This is not the first time Russia has engaged in such disruptive behavior,” President Zelensky remarked, expressing his concerns over the consistent attempts to hinder the critical grain initiative. “Our decision to collaborate with Turkey and the United Nations in establishing a grain corridor was a prudent policy. Working with Russia has proven impossible due to their continuous provocations,” he added.

The ‘Grain from Ukraine’ programme has been a lifeline for millions across the globe, ensuring access to sustenance and reducing food insecurity. Former Vice President of the World Bank and Nigeria’s former Minister of Education, Obiageli Ezekwesili, along with two other African leaders, have actively supported the initiative as ambassadors, acknowledging its significant impact on vulnerable communities.

President Zelensky emphasized that Russia’s actions are not isolated incidents but part of a broader imperialistic agenda aimed at monopolizing the global grains market. The Russian inspection program for vessels carrying Ukrainian grain has been heavily criticized by Ukraine and its allies, accusing Russia of willful delays to maintain its hold on the market.

To address this challenge, Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been instructed to prepare official signals to the United Nations and Turkey, urging them to continue supporting the ‘Grain from Ukraine’ initiative despite Russia’s suspension. President Zelensky reaffirmed Ukraine’s commitment to the program and highlighted the importance of international cooperation in ensuring global food security.

The international community has rallied behind Ukraine’s grain export efforts, with more than 30 donor countries, including Turkey, Qatar, Japan, Norway, Korea, Canada, and the USA, pledging over $200 million in support.
