In a White House statement following the call, President Biden strongly condemned the actions of Hamas, which have included hostage-taking, targeting entire families, the elderly, and children. He underscored the imperative of global unity against such acts of terrorism.
The United States currently provides over $3 billion in annual military assistance to Israel, with much of the equipment already in the pipeline for delivery. Moreover, there are six strategically located stockpiles of American ammunition and arms within Israel, totaling approximately $2 billion, earmarked for emergency use or support in U.S. military operations in the region. Utilizing these stockpiles would necessitate approval from both countries.
Looking ahead, lawmakers from both sides of the aisle expressed the hope that the ongoing leadership turmoil within the Republican party would be swiftly resolved. This would enable Congress to respond promptly with additional funding for Israel if the situation demands it. Representative Mike Lawler, a Republican from New York, emphasized the urgent need for a unified response given Israel’s status as one of the United States’ closest allies in the world.
