The National and State House of Assembly Election Petition Tribunal has issued a landmark ruling, leading to the removal of Umar Mukhtar Yerima, the member representing Tarauni Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, on the grounds of certificate forgery.
The tribunal found in favour of the petitioner, Hafizu Kawu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), declaring him as the duly elected winner of the February 25th election.
The three-man panel, presided over by Justice I. P. Chima, reached the decision after extensive deliberations. The ruling stated that the primary school certificate presented by Umar Mukhtar Yerima, who represented the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), was fraudulent. The certificate from Hausawa Primary School was invalidated as the respondent’s name did not match its records.

Hafizu Kawu, the APC candidate, had initiated the legal challenge against Yerima’s victory in the election, claiming that irregularities marred the process. The tribunal’s judgment highlighted the issue of certificate forgery as a significant factor influencing the outcome of the election.
The ruling not only nullified the total votes secured by Umar Mukhtar Yerima during the election but also deemed them as wastage. Consequently, the tribunal declared Hafizu Kawu, who was the runner-up in the election, as the winner. This decision reflects the tribunal’s commitment to upholding the integrity of elections and ensuring that candidates with valid credentials are elected to represent their constituencies.
The ruling serves as a reminder of the importance of transparency, honesty, and compliance with electoral regulations in the democratic process. It emphasizes that individuals seeking public office must adhere to ethical and legal standards, including the verification of their qualifications, to uphold the sanctity of the electoral system and the trust of the electorate.
