In a significant turn of events, the Kano Governorship Election Petition Tribunal has nullified the election of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and declared Nasiru Gawuna, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, as the rightful winner of the March 18 election.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf had contested the election on the platform of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and was initially declared the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after the poll in March.
However, after hearing the petitions, the three-man tribunal panel reached a landmark decision. They ordered the withdrawal of the certificate of return that INEC had presented to Governor Yusuf and directed that a new certificate of return be issued to Nasiru Gawuna.

In its ruling, the tribunal deducted 165,663 votes from Governor Yusuf’s total votes, categorizing them as invalid. These affected ballots were deemed invalid because they lacked the necessary stamps or signatures.
This judgment comes after a span of approximately six months following the governorship election. Notably, Nasiru Gawuna had conceded defeat shortly after INEC presented the certificate of return to Governor Yusuf. In a brief two-minute audio statement on March 29, Gawuna stated that, as a devout Muslim, he was compelled to accept the election’s outcome, whether in his favor or not. He further mentioned that while his campaign team had requested a review of the election results by INEC, the commission had ultimately reaffirmed Yusuf as the rightful winner.
