In a startling development, the National and State House of Assembly Election Petition Tribunal has nullified the election of Idris Dankawu of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) for allegedly presenting a forged West African School Certificate (WAEC) while vying for the Kumbotso Federal House of Representatives Constituency seat in Kano State.
The verdict came as a result of a petition filed by Munir Babba Danagudi of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who had accused Dankawu of submitting a fraudulent Secondary School Certificate to gain admission into Nuhu Bamalli Polytechnic in Kaduna.
In a groundbreaking judgment that reverberated throughout the political landscape, Justice I.P. Chima declared that “Idris Dankawu of NNPP has forged his WAEC certificate,” leading to the nullification of the election.

But that wasn’t the end of the tribunal’s ruling. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was ordered to invalidate the Certificate of Return previously awarded to Dankawu. In a turn of events, Danagudi was declared the rightful winner of the Kumbotso Federal Constituency poll that took place on February 25, 2023.
Justice Chima underlined the tribunal’s commitment to upholding the law, stating, “Having satisfied with the provision of the law, we hereby declare and return Munir Babba Danagudi as the winner of the Kumbotso Federal House of Representatives Election.”
The judgment concluded by directing each party to bear its own costs, marking a significant turn of events in the political landscape of Kano State.
