President Bola Tinubu, assured Google Global Vice President, Mr. Richard Gingras, of the Federal Government’s readiness to collaborate with the tech giant to generate one million digital jobs in Nigeria.
The meeting, which took place on Friday evening, emphasized Nigeria’s pool of talented and creative young individuals, eager to excel in the era of Artificial Intelligence.
“We are glad that Google is ready to partner with us. You have heeded our call for digital innovation and youth empowerment. Your commitment to create one million digital jobs in Nigeria aligns with our vision for economic growth,” President Tinubu stated.

He further emphasized the government’s dedication to supporting Google‘s corporate responsibility endeavours, as Nigeria embarks on economic reforms.
The meeting also touched upon Google’s commitment to promoting free speech, press freedom, and democracy through its platforms. President Tinubu declared that upholding these principles is in the public interest and essential for a free society.
In his address, Mr. Richard Gingras revealed that he was in Nigeria for the West Africa Journalism Innovation Conference. He expressed admiration for the creativity and talent displayed by Nigerian youth in adopting technology and digital tools to enhance access to information and democracy.
Mr. Gingras highlighted Google’s capabilities in Artificial Intelligence and other digital innovations, empowering young Nigerians to become digital entrepreneurs. He also mentioned Google’s subsea cable, Equiano, named after the Nigerian slave abolitionist, which landed in Nigeria in April 2022 and is poised to significantly impact future internet connectivity demands.
Furthermore, Google pledged its support in securing Nigeria against disinformation and fake news, emphasizing its willingness to continue the partnership with the Nigerian government.
“Google has a deep interest in Nigeria. We want to support the government’s efforts to create one million digital jobs. With our tools and capabilities, we can make this happen. Additionally, we will collaborate with your National Security Adviser to secure Nigeria,” Mr. Gingras affirmed.
Accompanying Mr. Gingras on the visit were Mr. Adewolu Adene, Government and Public Affairs Manager for Google in West Africa, and Mr. Dapo Olorunyomi, the Publisher of Premium Times.
