The Supreme Court of Nigeria has scheduled December 15 as the date for delivering judgment on the appeal seeking the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), from detention.
A five-member panel of the apex court, headed by Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, announced the date after lawyers for both the Federal Government and Nnamdi Kanu adopted their final briefs of argument.
Kanu’s legal team is not only requesting the immediate release of their client but is also seeking “very heavy and punitive costs” against the Federal Government. They argue that the Nigerian government’s continued detention of Kanu is unconstitutional.

On the other hand, the Federal Government is urging the Supreme Court to uphold its appeal, overturn the Court of Appeal’s judgment that ordered Kanu’s release, and order the resumption of his trial on terrorism-related charges. The Court of Appeal had ordered Kanu’s release and dismissed a 15-count terrorism charge against him, ruling that the Nigerian government had violated established laws when it forcefully rendered Kanu from Kenya to the country for the continuation of his trial.
The judgment is highly anticipated, as it will have significant implications for Kanu’s continued detention and the legal proceedings surrounding his case.
