Following the conclusion of the 34th Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Abidjan, the Nigerian football team, the Super Eagles, found themselves without a coach as the interim contract with Portuguese manager Jose Peseiro expired.
The original contract, which ended in June of the previous year, was extended to cover the AFCON 2023 period.
The interim six-month contract renewal was contingent on Nigeria reaching the semi-finals, a condition fulfilled when the Super Eagles defeated Angola in the quarterfinals. However, with the expiration of the AFCON 2023, Peseiro’s coaching tenure also came to an end.

Nigeria’s upcoming task is to qualify for the 2025 AFCON, with preliminary rounds set to begin next month. Despite the tradition of CAF announcing fixtures during the ongoing final series, this time, the schedule for the next edition’s qualifying series was not released after the conclusion of Cote d’Ivoire 2023.
The Super Eagles also have commitments in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, hosting Bafana Bafana on June 2 and traveling to Benin Republic for another World Cup qualifier on June 9. The preliminary round for the Morocco 2025 Africa Cup of Nations is scheduled to start on March 18.
While the opponents for the qualifying series are yet to be determined, the international window in March offers a chance for teams to play two matches. The June window is already allocated to World Cup qualification games. As the Super Eagles embark on these challenges, the search for a new coach is imminent to guide the team through these crucial campaigns.
