The governors of Nigeria’s South-East region convened a two-day summit in Owerri, Imo State, to address the growing challenges of insecurity and economic disruptions in the region.
The summit aimed to explore ways to overcome these challenges and restore stability and prosperity to the area.
The five governors from the South-East region shared their perspectives on the consequences of escalating insecurity on the once strong and progressive regional economy. Governor Hope Uzodinma, who chairs the South-East Governors’ Forum, emphasized the importance of unity and collaboration among the five states to address security breaches and the declining economic fortunes of the region.

Governor Uzodinma highlighted the role of the private sector in fostering Igbo unity and development. He called for successful Igbo investors to support Ohaneze Ndigbo, a prominent Igbo socio-cultural organization, in uniting the South-East people to speak with one voice. He also proposed the establishment of a special forum for political office holders from the region to meet regularly and exchange ideas on Igbo matters.
The governor stressed the need to address the security challenges in the South-East to ensure the uninterrupted pursuit of legitimate economic activities, even amidst sit-at-home orders. He expressed his belief in the region’s role within the Nigerian project and expressed confidence in the eventual emergence of a Nigerian president of Igbo extraction.
Governor Uzodinma also advocated for the establishment of the South-East Orient Technology Unit as a hub for translating research findings into new products. Additionally, he proposed the creation of a South-East Commodity Board to boost agriculture and commerce in the region. He highlighted the importance of dredging the Oguta Lake into the Atlantic Ocean as a means to stimulate the regional economy.
Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State echoed the commitment of the South-East governors to the region’s agenda. He emphasized the need for a 100-year plan for the region and urged a homeland consciousness of self-belief to execute such a plan.
Governor Alex Otti of Abia State emphasized the critical importance of security and the economy to the survival of the Igbo people. He called for collective involvement and cooperation to address these challenges, suggesting the need to engage with youth, ensure justice, stop exploitation by those in power, and promote freedom for all individuals.

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State called for a common strategy and operational plan to secure the region, suggesting the creation of a command and control center shared among all South-East states. He urged leaders to address the root causes of insecurity, including unemployment and poverty, and called for regional integration into a common market to attract larger investments.
The South-East governors’ summit received commendation from the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu. He expressed sadness over the region’s killings and called for a non-kinetic approach to solving insecurity issues. Mr. Iwuanyanwu appealed to the Federal Government to support the South-East governors’ efforts in engaging youth through skills training, empowerment, and job creation.
The Obi of Onitsha, Alfred Achebe, emphasized unity and collaboration among the South-East states in addressing insecurity and economic challenges in the region.
The summit aimed to bring leaders together to develop strategies for addressing the pressing issues facing the South-East region, and its outcomes will likely shape regional policies and initiatives in the near future.
