South African Parliamentary Speaker Faces Imminent Arrest Over Corruption Charges

The parliamentary speaker of South Africa, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, is on the brink of arrest following a court ruling on Tuesday that dismissed her attempt to prevent law enforcement agencies from apprehending her.

Mapisa-Nqakula, a prominent member of the ruling African National Congress (ANC), stands accused of corruption stemming from her tenure as defense minister.

According to prosecutors, Mapisa-Nqakula allegedly received illicit payments totaling $135,000 from a defense contractor between December 2016 and July 2019. Additionally, she purportedly solicited an additional bribe amounting to $105,000, although it was not paid. These allegations have prompted calls from opposition lawmakers for her resignation from her position as parliamentary speaker.

Mapisa-Nqakula had previously sought to block her imminent arrest through a court application, but her bid was unsuccessful as a judge at the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria dismissed her plea. In response to the court’s decision, the National Prosecuting Authority confirmed that the arrest would proceed, although the timing was not disclosed.

Prior to her court application, Mapisa-Nqakula had been instructed by prosecutors to surrender herself for processing and to appear before a judge.
