On Tuesday, during a visit by the leadership of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), led by its president, Dr. Chris Isiguzo, in Abuja, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Nyesom Wike, issued a stern warning to those who have not paid their ground rent in the FCT.
Wike emphasized that this warning should not be taken lightly, as there will be consequences.
The warning comes after the FCT Administration published a list of individuals, organizations, and agencies that owe ground rent in September.

The FCTA reminded land allottees of their obligations to pay in advance from January 1 of each year as specified in the Certificate of Occupancy (C of O). Failure to comply with these terms could lead to the revocation of their land titles.
Wike assured defaulters that he is committed to taking action, and he will not just make empty threats. He mentioned that he and the Minister of State have the capacity and political will to enforce these rules and regulations.
Wike emphasized that Nigerians should not underestimate the seriousness of the situation and that the law will be applied if ground rent remains unpaid after the final notice.

Furthermore, Wike highlighted the positive impact of the FCTA’s efforts to increase Internally Generated Revenue and put an end to abandoned projects in the FCT since the removal of the administration from the Treasury Single Account.
“The law has been there before I came. The only problem is applying the law. The Minister of State and I have the capacity and political will to do what is right.
“You know Nigerians are funny, believing that nothing will happen. Something will happen. We can’t continue that way; we can’t.
We have given defaulters a final notice to go and pay, and they said it was initial “garage” (false bravery). Something will happen.
“By the time we give the final notice and you don’t pay, the law will be applied,” he said.
