Farida Abdulkabir, a prominent socialite and the CEO of House of Phreedah, has attributed her recent suicide attempt to her failed marriage.
The incident, which occurred on Thursday night, was captured in a viral video where Abdulkabir, dressed in black, was seen sobbing while being restrained from jumping into the lagoon on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos.
In a voice note that went viral on social media, Abdulkabir revealed that she battled depression and her recent suicide attempt was a result of her N100 million marriage to fellow Lagos socialite, Demola Okulaja, which ended just two months after their union. The collapse of her marriage left her devastated and led to multiple suicide attempts.

Abdulkabir admitted that friends and family had warned her against entering the marriage, cautioning her that Okulaja was primarily interested in her wealth. Despite the warnings, she proceeded with the marriage and deeply regretted the decision.
“I am so sorry for putting my children in such a position. I would not have forgiven myself if I had abandoned them after committing suicide,” she expressed remorsefully.
Her estranged husband, Demola Okulaja, also engaged in a public feud with Abdulkabir on social media, with both parties trading insults and accusations.
Following news of her suicide attempt, several celebrities extended their support and encouragement to Abdulkabir. Notably, Nollywood actress Iyabo Ojo revealed that she had been on a call with the socialite just before the incident and expressed regret for not realizing the severity of the situation. Ojo reassured Abdulkabir that her present challenges will pass and encouraged her to stay strong.
Another actress, Nkechi Blessing, emphasized the toll that online trolling and bullying can have on mental health. She prayed for Abdulkabir’s strength to overcome the challenges and urged her friends and family to provide constant support during this difficult period.
The incident has highlighted the importance of mental health awareness and the need for a supportive community, especially in the face of online negativity and personal struggles.
