The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has taken legal action to halt the Nigerian House of Representatives from procuring 360 sports utility vehicles (SUVs) at a cost of N57.6 billion for its members.
SERAP’s move comes in response to reports that each SUV would be priced at a minimum of N160 million.
The organization has filed a suit challenging the legality of the expenditure for these luxurious and bulletproof vehicles for lawmakers, and is now requesting an interim injunction to prevent the acquisition of these vehicles.

SERAP has also reached out to President Bola Tinubu, urging him to intervene and prevent the House of Representatives from taking delivery of these SUVs until the court application is resolved. The organization asserts that proceeding with the procurement would negatively impact the ongoing legal action and undermine the rule of law.
SERAP highlights that this action is in accordance with principles of the rule of law, judicial independence, and the public interest, and urges the Tinubu-led administration to uphold these principles, as required by international conventions against corruption and human rights to which Nigeria is a signatory.
