The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has taken a firm legal stance against Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas.
SERAP has initiated legal proceedings in the Federal High Court, Lagos, challenging what it perceives as a controversial proposal to allocate a whopping N110 billion for various expenditures.
The organization’s legal action targets a proposed allocation of N40 billion for the procurement of 465 luxury and bulletproof vehicles for members and officials. An additional N70 billion has been designated as ‘palliatives’ for newly inducted members. These proposed expenditures have drawn widespread criticism and sparked outrage, particularly considering the prevailing economic challenges and poverty faced by many Nigerians.

SERAP’s move comes shortly after Senate President Akpabio confirmed that holiday allowances had been disbursed into senators’ bank accounts. This revelation raised eyebrows as it was made amidst concerns about economic hardship in the country.
The legal proceedings initiated by SERAP aim to challenge the legitimacy of these proposed expenditures and ensure greater transparency and accountability in the allocation of public funds. The case puts into focus the crucial issues of fiscal responsibility and equitable distribution of resources in a nation striving to address pressing socio-economic challenges.
