Africa is poised to make Olympic history as Senegal prepares to host the continent’s inaugural Youth Olympic Games in 2026. Dakar, the vibrant capital of Senegal, will serve as the backdrop for this groundbreaking event, which is slated to take place from October 31 to November 13, 2026.
With competitions spanning across 35 different sports, the Youth Olympic Games will showcase the talents of young athletes from around the world over the course of 14 exhilarating days. Originally slated for Dakar, Diamniadio, and Saly during the Dakar 2022 timeframe, the event has evolved into the annual Dakar en Jeux festival, a celebration of culture and sport aimed at fostering greater youth participation in athletics.
The decision to award Senegal the honor of hosting the Youth Olympic Games received resounding support from International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach. Citing Africa’s youthful population and deep-rooted passion for sports, Bach expressed his enthusiasm for the event, stating, “With a young population and a passion for sport, it is time for Africa, it is time for Senegal.”
