Senator Ali Ndume, the Senate Chief Whip, has revealed that a group of senators are prepared to take significant action against the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, if he continues to make unwarranted statements.
Ndume’s comments came in response to Akpabio’s recent remarks regarding a financial allowance provided to lawmakers for their annual recess.
During a session before the Senate proceeded on its annual recess, Akpabio mentioned that a token had been deposited into lawmakers’ accounts to enable them to “enjoy their holidays.” The statement caused an uproar among Nigerians, who criticized the lawmakers for being disconnected from the country’s hardships.

In an interview with the BBC Hausa service, Senator Ndume expressed his disappointment with Akpabio’s comments, deeming them unbecoming of a leader. Ndume clarified that the money received by the senators was a statutory entitlement, not a special payment.
He stated, “All senators received N2 million. What’s the big deal if I receive N2 million allowance in my capacity as a senator?” He cautioned Akpabio for creating a misleading impression about the payment.
Ndume also revealed that a group of senators is contemplating drastic action against Akpabio if he continues to make reckless statements and treats fellow senators as if they were children.
Senator Kawu Sumaila, representing Kano South district, echoed the sentiment of transparency in budget spending. He confirmed the receipt of N2 million by the senators but called on the Senate president to publicly explain the source and purpose of the funds.
Sumaila challenged Nigerians to demand full disclosure of the money’s origin and utilization. He emphasized that the matter is sensitive and has implications for the public perception of the Senate’s financial activities.
Akpabio’s initial statement and subsequent withdrawal triggered criticism from Nigerians, revealing the public’s keen interest in accountability and transparency in government spending. The reactions also underscore the senators’ responsibility to effectively communicate their actions to the citizens they represent.
