Senator Sani Warns Northern Leaders Against Plot to Unseat Tinubu in 2027

Senator Shehu Sani, a former lawmaker from Kaduna, issued a strong warning to northern leaders regarding their reported plans to unseat President Bola Tinubu in the upcoming 2027 presidential elections.

In a recent interview with Arise Television, Sani emphasized that such actions could endanger the unity and stability of Nigeria.

Sani’s remarks come amidst reports of northern leaders regrouping and potentially using former President Muhammadu Buhari as a figurehead to challenge the current administration. He stressed that if this tactic fails, it could result in significant divisions within the country.

“There is proof of a coalition building,” Sani stated. “Political forces in the North are using former President Buhari to undermine Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. They aim to leverage his popularity to demonstrate that the current government has failed the North, despite the substantial support it received during the election.”

Sani underscored the importance of national unity over political ambitions. He noted that during Buhari’s eight-year tenure, no serious southern political figure challenged him, and similarly, northern leaders should consider the country’s overall stability.

“If politicians in the South adopt similar tactics, national cohesiveness might completely collapse,” Sani warned. He urged northern leaders to put aside their personal ambitions for the 2027 elections for the sake of the nation’s unity and future. “The North will have a rightful claim to power after this administration serves a second term.”

Furthermore, Sani advised northern leaders to focus on addressing the region’s pressing issues rather than seeking political advancement. He attributed Northern Nigeria’s longstanding challenges, such as instability and poverty, to historical governance failures and corruption.

“The North has held political power for a considerable period,” Sani said. “This authority should have been used to address underdevelopment, education, and insecurity. Instead, the region lagged in various development indices due to frequent misuse of power.”

Despite high expectations for the previous administration, many issues remain unresolved in the North. Sani called for a concentrated effort to bring about development, emphasizing that power should benefit the general populace rather than enrich a select few.

He also recommended restructuring as a means for the Tinubu administration to address these enduring problems. “Restructuring would offer Nigerians a comprehensive opportunity to address underdevelopment, allowing the North to utilize its assets effectively to tackle its challenges.”

Sani specifically urged northern leaders to support the administration’s security policies and initiatives. “Northerners hold significant security positions, presenting a unique opportunity to address the region’s security challenges. Having northerners in power should bring clear benefits to the North, which constitutes about 70% of Nigeria’s landmass and a large portion of its population.”

Concluding his remarks, Sani emphasized that appointing northerners to positions of power is insufficient. The focus should be on ensuring these leaders prioritize and effectively address the region’s core issues.
