Catholic Bishops of the Owerri Ecclesiastical Province have made a strong appeal to end the “indiscriminate sit-at-home orders” in the South-east region of Nigeria.
They expressed concern over the detrimental impact of these orders on local economies, culture, and the mental well-being of the populace.
During their meeting at the Umuahia Diocesan Secretariat, the Bishops issued a communiqué after prayerful deliberations on various matters of significance to the region. They urgently called for an end to the disruptive practice of sit-at-home orders, particularly those enforced by a faction within the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The Bishops highlighted the negative consequences of such actions, emphasizing that the sit-at-home directives have disrupted lives, impeded economic activities, and adversely affected education and commerce. The Bishops underscored that the South-east, often hailed as the commercial hub of the nation, is now grappling with self-inflicted wounds as traders are forced to stay home on Mondays, historically the busiest and most productive day of the week for many.
The communiqué was signed by the Archbishop of Owerri, Most Rev. Lucius Ugorji, who chairs the Owerri Ecclesiastical Province, along with other high-ranking Catholic clerics in attendance. The Bishops expressed concern about the erosion of cultural practices and traditions due to the boycott of significant events such as traditional weddings, festivals, and holiday celebrations.
In the document titled ‘Moving Beyond the Present Precipice’, the Bishops lamented the challenging conditions faced by Nigerians, pointing out the difficulties brought about by government policies. They acknowledged that policies like the unification of the foreign exchange market might have been designed with good intentions but criticized their abrupt and poorly executed implementation, leading to significant hardships for the people.
Amidst these challenges, the Catholic Bishops urged Nigerians not to succumb to despair. They called for hope, encouraging citizens to sustain the spirit of political awakening observed during the 2023 general elections. The Bishops highlighted the collective demand for a better Nigeria for all citizens, transcending ethnic and religious boundaries.
The spiritual leaders also appealed to Nigerians to work together for the common good, emphasizing equity, justice, and peace as guiding principles for a brighter future. As voices of reason and unity, the Catholic Bishops of the Owerri Ecclesiastical Province advocate for a collective effort towards progress and the well-being of all Nigerians.
