In a recent interview, Minister of Works Dave Umahi emphasized the construction of durable roads during his tenure as governor of Ebonyi State, asserting that roads should align with Nigeria’s climate conditions.
During an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Umahi spoke about the importance of constructing roads that can withstand the test of time without frequent maintenance.
He referenced his experience as governor, stating, “I also noticed that some of the projects, while you are still on the roads, they have gone bad.”

He continued by sharing his insights on road quality, saying, “When I was on the Abuja-Lokoja Road, I discovered that the asphalt was flowing. And if you enter that road with speed, that is the end of such a person.”
Umahi further expressed his dedication to ensuring that Nigeria’s roads are built to high standards, suggesting that road quality should align with the country’s temperature and conditions. He mentioned that the Tinubu administration is committed to funding the construction of durable roads and exploring options to reduce construction costs.
“We are looking at all these things. How do we cut down costs? Because the primary issue is also the cost of construction. We are looking at the figures, but it looks like a lot of contractors are not willing. But I will make them make the change – we are all engineers,” Umahi said.
The Minister emphasized collaboration among stakeholders to create roads that can withstand the challenges of time and weather. He urged contractors to prioritize the country’s development over excessive profits, noting that the President is dedicated to supporting road construction efforts.
Umahi’s remarks underscore the importance of sustainable infrastructure development to support the nation’s growth and connectivity.
