The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Martins Amaehwule, of the Rivers State House of Assembly, has been suspended by 26 MPs as a result of a political crisis.
They have chosen Hon. Edison Ehie, the former House leader who was suspended, to serve as the new Speaker in an unprecedented action.
This shocking turn of events comes after members’ earlier, unsuccessful attempt to remove Governor Fubara from office, which caused mayhem at the Assembly building early on Monday morning. Security men with heavy weapons had to cordone off the grounds because the situation had become so tense.

Following a brief plenary session in a chamber within Government House in Port Harcourt, the newly elected Speaker, Edison Ehie, spoke with reporters. He gave the people his word that he would protect the values of justice and equity for all Rivers State citizens. Ehie promised to uphold the rule of law and to behave in the legislature’s and the people’s best interests.
In addition, he stressed the significance of upholding the judiciary and executive branches of government while preserving the independence of the Rivers State House of Assembly. In addition, he promised that the Committee of Information would disclose the identities of suspended members following a fair hearing.
The Parliamentary Association of Nigeria announced an indefinite walkout from Abuja as a result of the crisis, forcing the legislature to adjourn in order to avoid more sittings. Speaker Ehie urged harmed parties to pursue legal action in the courts in light of the adjournment.
