A group of retired generals from the Nigerian military has offered strategic advice on addressing the persistent insecurity challenges in the country. The retired military officers expressed their views during a discussion on how to effectively tackle terrorism, banditry, and other security threats within a six-month timeframe.
One retired Airforce General emphasized the need for a decisive and time-bound approach, suggesting that President Bola Tinubu, as the Commander-in-Chief, should issue a definitive order to the Minister of Defence, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Service Chiefs, and the Inspector General of Police.
The order would mandate the security forces to decisively deal with criminal elements, with a specified timeline for achieving the desired results. Non-compliance within the set timeframe could result in consequences for the relevant authorities.

Another retired Army General proposed an operational approach termed the ‘Scotch Egg Approach,’ involving a coordinated and strategic effort to box in criminal elements in key areas. Using the example of the Birnin Gwari forest, the general suggested mobilizing personnel from different divisions, closing offices, and deploying armed forces to encircle and eliminate adversaries. This approach aims to address the challenges posed by terrorists and bandits effectively.
In terms of long-term solutions, an Airforce General emphasized the need for a comprehensive reorientation of the police force. Suggesting the removal of the term ‘Force’ from the police’s name, the general proposed establishing a Joint Counter Terrorism Training Centre for all para-military personnel.
This initiative would involve joint combat training for lower-ranked personnel from the military, police, NSCDC, Immigration, Customs, and other relevant agencies, fostering collaboration and enhancing their ability to work together.
The retired generals collectively underscored the urgency of addressing the security situation in Nigeria and highlighted the importance of both short-term and long-term measures to ensure a comprehensive and effective response.
