Nigeria Immigration Service Addresses Alleged Unprofessional Conducts at Passport Offices
The Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Caroline Wura-Ola Adepoju, has expressed her deep concern over reports of misconduct involving immigration personnel at various Passport offices across the country.
In an official statement dated October 13, 2023, and shared on the Nigeria Immigration Service’s Twitter handle, the Service Public Relations Officer, DCI Aridegbe Adedotun, conveyed the Comptroller General’s response to these allegations.
In response to these complaints, the Comptroller General has taken decisive action by ordering an investigation into the matter, focusing on potential noncompliance with Ministerial directives regarding the timelines for Passport administration.

The backdrop of this issue is the recent clearance of Passport application backlogs across the nation, in line with directives from the Honourable Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo. On October 4, 2023, the Minister announced a new timeline, allowing for the processing and issuance of Passports within two weeks. To ensure transparency and accountability, the Honourable Minister, as well as the Acting CGI, provided contact phone numbers for the general public to report any misconduct by NIS personnel at Passport offices.
The Nigeria Immigration Service has been actively monitoring compliance with the new Passport issuance timeline, both within the country and at missions abroad. As of October 13, 2023, most Passport offices are successfully producing Passports for applicants who enrolled on October 11, 2023.
The Service also took the opportunity to clarify that Passport applications related to reissuance of lost Passports and data changes may require additional time due to security clearances and correspondence with the Service Headquarters before approval and production.
The Acting Comptroller General is now appealing to the public to report any instances of misconduct by immigration personnel through various communication channels. They have provided contact numbers and encourage the public to use their official website for Passport applications and payments to avoid dealing with individuals or entities requesting cash payments for Passport services.
The Nigeria Immigration Service is committed to addressing these concerns and maintaining high standards of professionalism in their operations.
