In the midst of a growing controversy surrounding the educational credentials of President Bola Tinubu, the Labour Party’s Presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has called on the President to provide clarity regarding his educational background.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, Obi urged Tinubu to reveal crucial details about his academic career, including the names of the schools he attended, whether he served in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), and whether he ever changed his name.
The call comes after a United States court ordered Chicago State University to release Tinubu’s academic records at the request of the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, who previously sought to verify the authenticity of the academic certificate submitted by Tinubu to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Peter Obi noted that the ongoing controversy surrounding Tinubu’s identity has had a negative impact on Nigeria’s international image, suggesting that Nigerians are associated with issues of fraud, certificate forgery, and identity theft.
Obi believes that such controversies could have been avoided, particularly in light of Tinubu’s position as a former governor and a presidential aspirant.
In his statement, Peter Obi highlighted the importance of Tinubu providing a comprehensive account of his personal and educational background to dispel doubts and suspicions. He urged Tinubu to reveal his name, nationality, place of birth, parentage, details of primary and secondary schools attended, the universities he attended, and the certificates obtained. Additionally, Obi encouraged Tinubu to provide information about his participation in the NYSC and any instances of name changes.
The call from Peter Obi emphasizes transparency and disclosure in the realm of political leadership, particularly when it concerns the highest office in the nation.
