Prof., Ogbonna among Foreign Nationals to be Honored by Japanese Government

In a remarkable acknowledgment of academic excellence and international collaboration, Professor James Chukwuma Ogbonna, a distinguished microbiologist and former Deputy vice-chancellor at the University of Nigeria (UNN), is poised to receive a prestigious national honour from the Japanese government.

He is the current and pioneer Vice-chancellor of State University of Medical and Applied Sciences in Enugu State.

The Japanese embassy in Abuja disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday, May 8, that Prof. Ogbonna is among the esteemed recipients scheduled to be honored at the 2024 Spring Conferment of Decorations on Foreign Nationals.

He is set to be decorated with the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon, in recognition of his exceptional efforts in promoting academic exchange and mutual understanding between Japan and Nigeria, particularly in the domain of agriculture.

Prof. Ogbonna’s pivotal role in fostering academic partnerships between various Nigerian universities, including UNN, and prominent Japanese institutions such as Hokkaido University, Tsukuba University, and Osaka University, was highlighted in the statement. These collaborations have not only facilitated research endeavors but also paved the way for enriching student exchange programs, thereby fostering academic synergy between the two nations.

Furthermore, Prof. Ogbonna’s proactive initiatives have significantly contributed to promoting human exchange between Japan and Nigeria. He has facilitated the exchange of students and researchers, enabling 55 Nigerian students to pursue studies in Japan and facilitating numerous Japanese researchers to conduct vital research projects in Nigeria, particularly in the field of agriculture.
