President Bola Tinubu is set to inaugurate a comprehensive digital civil registration portal that covers birth, death, marriage, and various other vital statistics. This new system aims to enhance the efficiency and accessibility of civil registration data in Nigeria and align with the Sustainable Development Goal.
Nasir Kwarra, Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), announced this development during a pre-launch briefing in Abuja on November 6, 2023. Kwarra underlined that the e-CRVS (Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics) digital platform represents a substantial commitment by the government to streamline data collecting, processing, dissemination, and access to vital statistics.
The initiative is a collaboration between the National Population Commission and Barnksforte technology Limited, with the goal of transforming the country’s civil registration and vital statistics system through the use of digital technology. This shift away from traditional paper-based records has the potential to change the recording, tracking, and analysis of critical events, bringing Nigeria in line with international best practices.

The e-CRVS generates digital certificates for all recorded events, simplifies verification for approved organizations, and provides a central management system or dashboard for data analysis, allowing for more informed decision-making. This effort is an important step toward better civil registration and critical statistics in Nigeria during the next decade, from 2023 to 2030.

Furthermore, in preparation for Nigeria’s first digital Census, the NPC has done extensive mapping utilizing cutting-edge technology, notably the Geographic Information System, which has recorded geospatial data across the whole country. This extensive database will also be made available to the public and private sectors.
Both the digital CRVS and the geographic data repository will be launched by the President, signifying a significant advancement in Nigeria’s data management infrastructure. The event will also see the establishment of the CRVS National Coordination Committee, demonstrating the government’s commitment to improving civil registration across the country.
