In a pivotal development, President Bola Tinubu has stepped in to mediate the ongoing conflict between Rivers State Governor Simi Fubara and his predecessor, Governor Nyesom Wike. The disagreement had grown to become a state-wide political crisis.
At a Police Council meeting that both Fubara and Wike attended as members, Tinubu took the initiative to negotiate and possibly end the dispute between these two well-known political friends. Following the meeting that President Tinubu chaired at the presidential villa in Abuja, Governor of Bauchi State Bala Mohammed informed State House media on the outcome of this intervention.
Even though they were at odds publicly, Fubara and Wike shook hands in the Council Chambers prior to the meeting, suggesting that they might be open to working things out.

According to Governor Muhammad, who also serves as the chair of the Peoples Democratic Party Governors Forum (PDP-GF), President Tinubu has shown good faith in refraining from meddling in gubernatorial issues that PDP members have filed in court, which is why the opposition governors have opted to collaborate with him. The President and the PDP have collaborated more since this goodwill gesture.

Following the Police Council’s confirmation of Kayode Egbetokun as the substantive Inspector General of Police (IGP), efforts are being made to promote political unity and reconciliation. According to Ibrahim Geidam, Minister of Police Affairs, Egbetokun’s confirmation was justified by his excellent performance in his interim role as IGP and his detailed plan for guaranteeing national security, which qualified him for the post.
There is hope for a more stable and united political environment in Rivers State as a result of President Tinubu’s involvement and the ensuing efforts at reconciliation between Governor Fubara and former Governor Wike. This could open the door for more regional collaboration and development.
