Justice Anukam’s re-election highlights Nigeria’s strategic role in the global community. She was admitted to the Nigerian Bar in August 1985 after graduating from Obafemi Awolowo University in 1984. Her career includes notable positions such as Director of the International and Comparative Law Department at the Federal Ministry of Justice and Director of Special Programs at the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies.
The African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, established by African states to uphold human and peoples’ rights across the continent, operates alongside the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights. It comprises eleven judges elected by the AU Assembly of Heads of State and Government, nominated by AU member states.
Nigeria, having ratified the court’s founding protocol in 2004, continues to be an active participant in its mission to enhance human rights protections throughout Africa.
