In response to recent speculations, the Presidency has firmly denied any plans to move the Federal Capital from Abuja to Lagos.
Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Tinubu, categorically rejected the rumors, asserting that they initially surfaced during last year’s campaign as a tactic by political opponents to undermine Tinubu’s candidacy.
Onanuga characterized those perpetuating the rumor as dishonest individuals with ethnic and regional motives, aiming to sow division between the North and the South. He emphasized that Abuja’s status is secured by law and is not subject to change.

The Special Adviser addressed the relocation of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to Lagos, clarifying that this move does not equate to shifting the entire Federal Capital. According to Onanuga, such administrative decisions should be viewed in their specific context.

Regarding the relocation of certain Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) departments to Lagos, Onanuga argued that regulatory bodies should be in proximity to the industries they oversee. He urged against politicizing routine administrative decisions and cautioned against spreading misleading information that could distract from more significant issues.
