The Presidency has officially requested an investigation into the civil service framework to identify and eliminate individuals described as “moles” allegedly loyal to the main opposition, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
These individuals are suspected of being responsible for the unauthorized disclosure of classified documents, posing a threat to the security of sensitive information.
The call for an investigation comes in the wake of the recent leak of an internal memo indicating that President Tinubu allegedly approved the disbursement of N500 million from a total of N1 billion to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume. The funds were intended for the inauguration of a 37-member Tripartite Committee tasked with discussing the New National Minimum Wage.

Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, emphasized the urgency of addressing the issue to safeguard sensitive information within the government.
Onanuga expressed concern about the leaks, stating, “It’s not the first time a memo will leak. There was a memo leak when the President went to UNGA, about a request for money to pay for his hotel bills, and you wonder where it is leaking from.”
He further pointed out that leaks of official memos compromise the confidentiality of government communications and suggested that individuals leaking classified documents may be acting in favor of the opposition. Onanuga stressed the importance of adhering to civil service rules for handling official secrets, highlighting the need for an internal probe to identify and remove those responsible for the leaks.

“There are so many moles around who are probably doing the bidding of the opposition. They are not respecting the civil service rule for handling official secrets, and it shows that the government should look inwards to probe how memos between officials are getting into the public space. Memos that are supposed to be secret are not supposed to be flying all over the place,” Onanuga stated. The government aims to take decisive action to maintain the confidentiality and security of sensitive information.
