According to DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, the state police spokesman, officers were conducting an anti-crime patrol in Obosi around 7.30 pm on Saturday when they received the information. The concerned citizens directed the police to the location where the kidnappers had taken their victim.
The police then trailed the kidnappers to an uncompleted building surrounded by thick bushes in Umuota Village, Obosi, where a fierce exchange of gunfire occurred between the officers and the kidnappers.
During the confrontation, one of the criminals was shot and subsequently apprehended, while others managed to escape, some of them possibly sustaining gunshot wounds. The police recovered a double-barrel pistol, two live cartridges, and one expended cartridge from the gang.
The captured suspect identified himself as Nwasu Ikenna from Obosi and provided information about his accomplices who had managed to escape, including Ebuka (also known as Big), Chinedu Emmanuel, and Chukwu Ojoto. Unfortunately, one of the gang members who was wounded during the encounter succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital.
The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Aderemi Adeoye, praised the bravery of the police team involved in the rescue operation. He has directed that the remaining suspects be declared wanted and pursued until they are apprehended.
CP Adeoye assured the people of Obosi and all residents of Anambra State that the police command will continue its relentless efforts to combat crime and reduce it to the barest minimum in the state.
