Police neutralize 2 suspected kidnappers in Enugu

The Enugu State Police Command on Monday said its operatives successfully foiled an attempt by armed individuals to abduct travelers at Ogbeke-Nike, located along the Ugwogo-Nike/Opi/Nsukka Road in Enugu East Local Government Area.

The criminals had barricaded the road and opened fire, prompting a swift response from police operatives, including those on VIP escort duty.

During the confrontation, two of the culprits were swiftly neutralized, while others managed to escape into the nearby forest with gunshot injuries.

The authorities recovered one AK-47 rifle with two magazines, along with a significant quantity of live ammunition in various calibers, a machete, two mobile phones, and other incriminating items from the criminals.

Regrettably, one police operative sustained a gunshot wound during the exchange and was rushed to the hospital. Tragically, medical professionals confirmed his demise on the morning of September 4, 2023. His body has been placed in the mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, psc(+), the Commissioner of Police, expressed condolences for the loss of the valiant operative and commended the bravery and dedication of all police personnel, the Neighbourhood Watch Group, and Forest Guards involved in the operation.

The Commissioner urged the citizens of the state to remain vigilant, law-abiding, and to promptly report any individuals with gunshot wounds to the nearest police station.
