An Inspector of police in Imo State has been arrested following a viral video that depicted him assaulting a young man in Owerri, the state capital.
The incident, which generated widespread condemnation for the officer’s unprofessional conduct, prompted the Commissioner of Police, Muhammed Berde, to order the immediate arrest of the erring cop.
The video, captioned “Nigeria Police can Never be Your Friend Especially the Ones in Owerri,” showed the police inspector forcibly removing the cap of a young man and repeatedly slapping him on the face.

In a statement issued by Henry Okoye, the spokesperson for the Imo State Police Command, on Wednesday, Commissioner of Police Muhammed Ahmed Barde condemned the officer’s actions, describing them as contrary to the professional ethics and code of conduct of the police force. The statement expressed the police’s commitment to maintaining discipline and upholding professional standards within the force.
The Commissioner ordered his monitoring team to investigate and identify the officer involved in the incident for appropriate disciplinary action. The statement encouraged the victim to report the incident to the Police Public Relations Department in Owerri or contact the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Imo State.
A few hours later, Okoye confirmed that the erring police inspector had been identified and arrested. The officer is currently undergoing an orderly room trial, during which necessary disciplinary actions will be determined.
