Police Apprehends 2 Persons for Identity Theft, Romance Scams in Abuja

In adherence to the directive of the Acting Inspector-General of Police (Ag. IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, to ensure a safer cyber space in Nigeria, the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre has successfully arrested two individuals involved in criminal activities including conspiracy, identity theft, and romance scams.

Ongoing efforts are underway to apprehend additional suspects who are under investigation.

The two suspects, identified as Jerry Okoye and Ifeanyi Nwosu, both residing in Panasonic Estate in Idu, Abuja, have confessed to their involvement in computer-related fraud activities linked to romance scams and identity theft.

Substantial evidence collected from their electronic devices has provided critical insights into their criminal operations.

Jerry Okoye, a former student of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), claimed to have been associated with the music industry since 2016 and runs a public relations company.

However, he has admitted to engaging in fraudulent activities dating back to 2014, primarily through Facebook. Investigations have revealed compelling evidence connecting him to various fraud and romance scams, some of which have taken place recently.

Similarly, Ifeanyi Nwosu, a close associate of Jerry Okoye who was apprehended alongside the first suspect, initially claimed to have visited Jerry’s residence for music recording purposes. However, he has confessed to having a unique connection with a 69-year-old white woman named Winnie, describing her as both a fan and a friend. Evidence of financial transactions between Ifeanyi Nwosu and the elderly woman has also been uncovered.
