The Coalition of South East Youth Leaders (COSEYL), a prominent sociopolitical youth group in the South East geopolitical zone, has expressed concern over a reported plot to remove five “Distinguished Senators,” including Senator Ishaku Elisha Abbo and Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, through the Court of Appeal.
The alleged reason behind this move is their purported failure to support the emergence of Senator Godswill Akpabio as Senate President.
The coalition in a statement issued by the President, and Publicity Secretary, Comrades Goodluck Ibem, and Okey Nwaoru respectively, has taken this revelation seriously, particularly because Senator Abbo, who brought the matter to light, is an esteemed member of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC). COSEYL views this as a confirmation that such a plot against democratic processes may indeed be in motion.

The coalition lamented the potential impact of these actions on democracy, emphasizing the importance of embracing diverse views in democratic systems. They argue that persecuting individuals with opposing opinions or political choices is tantamount to dictatorial behaviour and undermines the democratic principles they hold dear.
Furthermore, COSEYL emphasized that the democracy Nigerians should strive for is one that upholds fundamental human rights and protects citizens’ freedom to express their views and support their preferred candidates. They believe that current developments do not align with the vision of Nigeria’s founding fathers who fought for a democracy based on respect and protection of these rights.
The coalition expressed concern over the expeditious manner in which Senator Abbo’s removal from office was executed by the Court of Appeal within just four days. They insinuated that such swiftness indicates the judiciary’s complicity in carrying out the agenda of influential individuals.
COSEYL called upon the judiciary to remain impartial and uphold justice and truth, asserting that the survival of Nigerian democracy relies on an impartial judiciary.
They also cited Senator Orji Uzor Kalu’s successful re-election as evidence of his popularity and performance. His constituents, according to COSEYL, overwhelmingly supported him due to his dedication to their welfare.
COSEYL warned that any plot against Senator Orji Uzor Kalu is an affront to the collective interests of the Igbo people, pledging their unwavering support for the mandate given to him by the constituents. Senator Orji, they claim, has consistently championed the cause of the voiceless in society.
In a call to action, the coalition appealed to elder statesmen, such as General Abdusalami Abubakar, General Ibrahim Babangida, and General Theophilus Danjuma, urging them to defend Nigeria’s hard-earned democracy, which they argue is at risk due to personal vendettas against senators who did not support Senator Godswill Akpabio’s emergence as Senate President.
COSEYL warned those involved in what they consider a wicked plot to abandon their scheme, as they believe that Nigerians will vehemently oppose such actions.
The coalition concluded by urging all Nigerians to stand up in defense of democracy, emphasizing the urgency of safeguarding democratic values during these turbulent times.
