The PhD project aims to develop tools and protocols for producing horse mussel seed (Modiolus modiolus) for restoration purposes. Horse mussels are important organisms in European waters, providing valuable ecosystem services. However, their populations are threatened, and their habitat is declining. The project will focus on producing horse mussel spats on different substrates and evaluating their suitability for habitat restoration.

Responsibilities and Qualifications:

  • Conduct experimental research on horse mussel production in a hatchery setting, from broodstock to spat.
  • Develop methods for producing spats on different cultch (substrates).
  • Contribute to daily hatchery routines, including maintenance, water quality monitoring, and data collection.
  • Engage in laboratory work, aquaculture system maintenance, and fieldwork.
  • Complete required PhD school courses and external stays to enhance expertise.
  • Disseminate research findings through peer-reviewed articles and scientific advice.
  • Attend conferences to present research and expand academic network.

Desired Traits and Skills:

  • Curiosity and motivation for marine research.
  • Attention to detail and patience for laboratory work.
  • Strong understanding of basic marine biology.
  • Experience in laboratory work, aquaculture systems, and fieldwork.
