Aim of the Project: Developing Tools for Sustainable Chemical Use

The project aims to contribute to the sustainable use of chemicals by developing tools for early identification of potentially hazardous substances. While chemicals offer significant societal and health benefits, some chemicals persist in the environment and can have adverse effects on biota, including humans. This research focuses on characterizing and identifying polymers as new and/or emerging risk chemicals (NERCs), with specific attention on fluorinated polymers that could degrade into per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

Your Role: Investigating Environmental Fate and Effects

As a PhD student in this project, your role will be crucial in investigating the environmental fate and effects of these chemicals. You will combine experimental studies on environmental fate and effects with cutting-edge AI methodologies, such as smart text mining of big data and machine learning-based modeling. The results of this research will provide valuable insights for national and international regulators and policymakers as they work towards achieving EU policy goals under the Green Deal and the Chemicals Strategy, aiming for zero pollution and a toxic-free environment.

Interdisciplinary Collaboration and Societal Impact
