The University of Copenhagen is inviting applications for a highly motivated candidate to undertake a three-year PhD project. The position is available in the context of an ERC-funded project called DataSpace, which is focused on conducting theoretical and ethnographical studies related to cross-border data infrastructures and their impact on everyday healthcare. The project is led by Professor Klaus Hoeyer at the Department of Public Health. The PhD project will be part of a work package led by Associate Professor Sara Green at the Section for History and Philosophy of Science, Department of Science Education, University of Copenhagen.
The Project – DataSpace:
DataSpace project explores the drivers behind the establishment of cross-border health-data infrastructures and aims to provide a new conceptualization of how data influences the pursuit of health. Healthcare is increasingly becoming data-driven, and multiple stakeholders, including patients, clinicians, administrators, policymakers, and industry players, want to exchange and access health data across national borders. The project examines the implications of these massive investments in healthcare, administration, and research. It investigates the types of infrastructures being established, their implications, and what data is included and acted upon concerning health, organizational performance, and health policy. DataSpace also delves into the societal changes where data have become integral to our lives, affecting how people experience themselves and the world around them.
PhD Project Description:
The sub-project will focus on contemporary efforts to facilitate the transnational sharing and reuse of data from general practice (GP). With initiatives like the European Health Data Space (EHDS) and national Danish programs, data from GPs are expected to integrate with genomic data, specialized care data, and patient-generated data. The PhD project will examine the benefits, challenges, and implications of integrating this data. It will investigate the effects of data integration on the users, specifically GPs and patients, and the practical aspects of data work in clinical practice. The project will also explore the epistemic and practical compatibility of diagnostic coding standards in general practice and specialized care, especially across different national jurisdictions and medical traditions. The research methodology will include participant observation, qualitative interviews with Danish GPs and patients, and an analysis of online discussions among patient groups and health professionals.
