The University of Göttingen is offering a Ph.D. position in the field of molecular biology to study the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying coiled shell morphologies in molluscs. This exciting opportunity involves investigating the genetic components of the shell-coiling program in the model mollusc Lymnaea stagnalis. The research also aims to contribute to the environmental monitoring of waterways by studying the response of L. stagnalis to endocrine-active chemicals.
Position Details:
- Research Focus: Investigating the genetic basis of coiled shell morphologies in molluscs and studying their response to endocrine-active chemicals in the environment.
- Location: University of Göttingen, Germany.
- Qualifications: Master’s degree in ovulation, cell biology, developmental biology, molecular biology, or a related field. Strong molecular biology skills, familiarity with large computational datasets, bioinformatic analysis, standard molecular lab techniques (RNA/DNA isolation, PCR, cloning, Sanger sequencing), and preferably experience with maintaining aquatic animal systems.
- Language Requirement: The working language of the group is English. For international applicants, a desire to learn German should be demonstrated.
- Skills: Proficiency in molecular biology techniques, bioinformatic analysis, and familiarity with scripting languages (Perl, Python, R), command line programs, and high-performance computing clusters.
- Application Deadline: August 31, 2023.
- Application Process: All applications should be in English and include a full academic CV, a 1-2 page research interest and motivation letter, 1-2 letters of reference, and contact details of referees.
