The Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, authorities on Tuesday, distributed 5,000 bags provided by the Enugu State Government as Palliative to Staff and Students of the University to cushion the effects of fuel subsidy removal.
During the flag off of the distribution of the rice at the permanent site of ESUT in Agbani, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, thanked the Governor of the State, Barr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, for including the university community in his administration’s palliative distribution chain.
He explained that recent Federal Government’s reforms have pressed Nigerians to the wall and plunged the people into untold hardships, adding that the palliative would lighten the financial pressure on the pockets of staff and students of the University.

“This would serve as a succour to some of us who ordinarily wouldn’t have had a square meal, not to talk of two square meals. The rice would get to all critical actors in the University, including indigent students and some groups that have been rendering selfless services to the University in maintaining peace and security.
“It may not go more than a bag for each staff, but even if it is a grain of rice that got to you, use it as a point of contact in underscoring the fact that the government is thinking about us, ” he said.
He said that the University Management received all the bags assigned to the institution and set up a committee to ensure that all the fabrics of the University were captured in the sharing formula.
While thanking Governor Mbah for extending the palliative to the University community, the Chairman of the Sharing Committee, Prof. Jude Udenta, said it would help to cushion the effects of the harsh economy being faced by Nigerians in the University community .
Professor Udenta, who is equally the Dean of Students Affairs, assured that the palliative would be shared according to the template already designed by his committee which captured the entire university community.
Similarly, in his reaction, the ESUT President of the Students’ Union Government, Comrade Chiagozie Ezenwaji, expressed appreciation to the state government, pledging students’ support to government programmes and policies.
