Nigerian fintech startup OPay has denied allegations on social media that it opened accounts for customers without their consent. An internal investigation was launched in response to customers claiming that their phone numbers were linked to OPay accounts they did not open.
The Nigerian Consumer Protection Commission and Nigeria’s Data Protection Commission are also investigating.
OPay’s Head of Marketing, Adekunle Adeyemi, said, “Based on our investigation, we discovered that these accounts were indeed opened by the owners at different points, but generally between 2019/2020.”

While OPay insists that its wallets can only be opened through the Central Bank of Nigeria’s established registration process, questions remain about whether users were adequately informed about such practices, as required by data protection laws in Nigeria.
The allegations began on social media, with users claiming they found OPay accounts linked to their phone numbers despite never opening such accounts. OPay maintains that it has never created or operated accounts on behalf of individuals and encourages those with concerns to contact the company via official channels.
