Ondo State Celebrates: Lucky Aiyedatiwa Sworn In As Governor

In a solemn ceremony at the Cocoa Conference Hall in Akure, the heart of Ondo State’s capital, the oath of office was administered by Chief Judge Justice Olusegun Odusola to Lucky Aiyedatiwa, ushering him into the role of governor at 5:18 pm.

Accepting the weighty responsibility amidst poignant circumstances, Aiyedatiwa expressed his heartfelt acknowledgment of assuming leadership following the untimely passing of Governor Arakurin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu. In his opening remarks, Aiyedatiwa emphasized the collective obligation to uphold and perpetuate Akeredolu’s legacy of good governance, vowing to continue and complete ongoing projects initiated under his late predecessor’s tenure.

Highlighting Akeredolu’s commendable achievements, Aiyedatiwa pledged to prioritize the welfare of the state’s citizens, promising to perpetuate a governance framework that prioritizes the people’s needs above all else.

The inauguration witnessed the presence of esteemed judges, top government officials, including the secretary to the state government, members of the state cabinet, the state All Progressives Congress (APC) chairman, and the state house of assembly.

Aiyedatiwa’s ascendancy to the governorship marks the culmination of a lengthy journey that began a year ago amid the backdrop of Akeredolu’s health challenges. His transition to this position was not devoid of controversy, enduring an impeachment plot and facing stark opposition from Akeredolu’s allies. However, constitutional adherence and persistence eventually led to his assumption of gubernatorial responsibilities.

The political landscape in Ondo State witnessed an upheaval in recent months, prompting calls for Akeredolu to transfer power to Aiyedatiwa as stipulated in the 1999 Constitution. Akeredolu, amidst his medical struggles abroad, transmitted power to Aiyedatiwa on December 13, 2023, before his unfortunate demise on December 27, 2023, due to complications from prostate cancer.

As Aiyedatiwa steps into this significant role, Ondo State braces itself for a leadership transition marked by a commitment to honor Akeredolu’s legacy while steering the state towards continued progress and development.
